Crucial Conversations

Updated: Mar 7, 2022

What are the crucial conversations you need to have to get the results you want? According to Video Review for Crucial Conversations by Kerry Patterson, crucial conversations are discussions between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions may vary, and emotions run high (2015).

After watching this video, I realized that crucial conversations must take place in order to bring about change in our organization. For example, my colleagues, Veronica Balli and Ileana Reyna, and I want to implement Blended Learning: Personalizing the Future of Education, which would cause a major disruption at our campus, so we must be able to have crucial conversations with our administration and staff to get them on board.

Why should we have Crucial Conversations in our organization? Well, we need to get unstuck. We have been in a rut of traditional, teacher centered teaching where minimal student centered learning takes place. This traditional model of instruction along with the global pandemic have both led to major gaps in students' learning. We must harness the power of technology to create a blended learning model that gives students choice, ownership, and voice through authentic learning opportunities, in order to get unstuck and begin making a change in the positive direction. So when we begin having our crucial conversations at our organization, we must be able to start with the heart and make sure to explain our motives which are student engagement, growth and achievement. We must also be able to have open communication where we are direct but respectful, seek different perspectives, and where everyone feels safe enough to share their thoughts. After learning about this process, we can confidently meet with our school leaders and begin having the crucial conversations needed to implement the change we seek.
