Inspire Change by Capturing the Heart

According to Arnold Bennett, “Any change, even a change for the better is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.” This quote could not be more true. Change is hard. Any change. Big or small. So when we want to promote our innovation plan and advocate for change in our organization, we need to target it in a very specific way. By using what we have learned from our readings and these videos, we can promote and motivate that change.

According to Kotter (2011), we need to “win over the hearts and minds” of people in order to promote change.

When I first started teaching, I was guilty of targeting only the mind, since I was taught all about the Cognitive Domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy and how important it was to target all of its levels in the classroom, but was never taught about the importance of the Affective or Psychomotor Domains. I also wanted to make sure my students were learning and growing intellectually, so that is what I focused on, growing the mind. As I grew more as an educator, I realized that targeting the heart first and building relationships and trust was far more beneficial. Students paid more attention and worked harder when I had won over their hearts first. I now know the importance of teaching the whole child by targeting the heart as well as the mind.

This same strategy applies to promoting change in our organization. If we win over the hearts of our administration and staff, they will be more motivated to change. So, how can we win over their hearts and minds? We start with our WHY, as Simon Sinek recommends in his video, Start with Why (2009). According to Sinek (2009) by starting with our WHY, our purpose, our belief, we can inspire the change. As I watch and internalize these videos, I can’t help but think about my innovation project, Blended Learning: Personalizing the Future of Education and how my coworkers/classmates, Veronica Balli, Ileana Reyna and I, will create a sense of urgency by starting with our WHY and making sure that we win over the hearts as well as the minds of our organization to ensure that this project comes to life.
